The architectural 'theme' of the house is depicted in the hand-made exterior columns; the small square on top with the long rectangle below. You will see this in the exterior railing, the doors, oak staircase posts, dining room comer cabinet doors and the large window on the staircase landing.
As you enter the main hall, note the mailbox bin beside the front door. No more piles of mail on the floor!
HALLWAY ENTRY A wide hall was designed because people always congregate in a hallway! Note the skylight above. It is not visible from the outside to keep the look of the house very traditional. Also boasts floor to ceiling lit cabinetry.
STUDY OR LIBRARY The wood is cherry and the custom cabinetry was made by a superlative craftsman; Warren Biro. Has a wood burning fireplace with brick hearth and beautiful fabric window coverings.
THE PARLOR OR LIVING ROOM Note the bookshelves within the arch. Inspired by the Sir John Soane Museum in London. He was the eminent English architect of the Bank of England. Coffered ceilings and formal bay window add charm to this room. To create an old-fashioned fireplace the designer constructed with eggshell (crackled tiles) custom made by Andy Blick and then mirrored the Tudor dental shelf on the exterior of the property and a high mantle for this gas burning fireplace.
THE DINING ROOM at 14 feet wide by 19 1/2 feet long - it’s the largest room in the house. Again, the design was focused on a very traditional Tudor dining space; hence the plate rail and corner cabinets, designed by Loy Leyland.
THE FAMILY ROOM The large green family room on the left is directly beside the kitchen area. The fireplace was done in river rock for a casual cozy family space and the built-in shelves allow ample space for media equipment and extra storage for books, toys etc.
THE KITCHEN is truly a cook's dream, immense baker’s pantry cabinet wall frames the hall into the kitchen and then the large space features blue maple kitchen cabinets and granite from a quarry in Italy. The high-end appliances have been serviced and updated over the years to make this a very happy, warm kitchen. Note the details like the European style rod with the cookbook holder to the right of the stove… large 2 level island with storage, seating and even a little beverage sink. PLUS a beautiful built in wrapped seat under the windows that face the garden for a large informal dining nook in the kitchen. Worth noting that as per any great residence. The kitchen is designed to enjoy Eastern (morning) and southern (all day) sunshine. There is also a Butler's Pantry connecting the Kitchen with the Dining Room.
VICTORIAN WRITING ROOM AKA WOK KITCHEN ROUGH IN The door was a source of great discussion - to create 'a statement' (and something eccentric) a Gothic designed door was chosen. The room boasts a diamond leaded glass window "and a ledge with a Victorian beadboard panel below. Navy Anna Glypta wallpaper from England. The built-in bookshelf (designed by Loy, built by Warren) with historically correct rosettes adorning the custom fluted columns, diamond window and door. This room is wired in for a wok kitchen; plumbing and all.
THE POWDER ROOM Lovely details like the display shelf for any miniature collections designed by Loy.
THE MUD ROOM A very handy area with 2 doors - one directly attached to the 2-car garage and the other with access to the yard - the tumbled marble tiles with a few custom-made rosettes thrown in, give ii a rustic look but it’s filled with practical and beautiful storage.
THE STAIRS A strong central architectural feature with wide steps with low risers to make climbing easier.
PRINCIPAL SUITE Painted in a Wedgwood blue and filled with built in shelves and cabinets and “his and hers” walk-in closets. The most notable features of this room are the beautifully designed beams. Loy Leyland designed these and even assured that they would withstand an earthquake.
The principal bathroom has a heated granite floor, soaker tub, double sink, separate toilet room and a wonderful steam shower.
LAUNDRY ROOM UPSTAIRS It is a wonderful convenience. Ironing has never been such a pleasure when you can gaze outside and see the beautiful trees. (There is also a laundry room downstairs)
KIDS ROOMS 3 additional very large rooms upstairs. One with ensuite - the other two sharing an ensuite.
DECKS Multiple private decks on top floor as well
THE BASEMENT The area was divided into various rooms. The first room through the glass doors on your left is the piano or games room. Go through the door at the end and you will find yourself in a very large wine cellar or cold storage room. This utilizes the space directly underneath the veranda. The other door in this room leads to one of the two furnace rooms.
BESIDE THIS ROOM IS A GUEST ROOM and an exercise/storage room. Moving down the hall, we come to another furnace room directly across from the staircase. This room houses another furnace as well as the fresh air exchanger. An air conditioning unit is located outside the house.
The first door to the right of the stairs is all STORAGE SPACE. Then an additional laundry room, presently being used to house an extra fridge and freezer. The next room on the left is another full guest room with ensuite! With its own private entrance your guest may never leave!
The large room at the end of the hall is an enormous MEDIA ROOM with a built-in bar and access to the backyard. Finally, the large bathroom was originally intended to be an exercise room with a sauna. There is all the wiring in for a sauna but is used as a spacious guest bathroom, complete with steam shower in the basement.
